Behaviour advice

Understanding your pet’s behaviour

We know that behavioural issues can be just as concerning as physical health problems. Whether your pet is anxious, reactive or simply not acting themselves, we’re here to help you get to the root of the issue — with kindness, compassion and evidence-based solutions.

How we can help

Behavioural consultations – for behavioural concerns

We offer one-on-one behaviour consultations with one of our experienced and qualified veterinary nurses, who holds a FdSc degree in canine behaviour and training.

If a vet has assessed your pet and suggested that they could benefit from a behavioural or confidence clinic, you’re welcome to book a behavioural consultation. We ask that you first complete our behaviour questionnaire. Please get in touch to request a copy of this.

Once submitted, you can call us to arrange a suitable appointment time. Bringing your dog to the appointment is optional — however, a veterinary examination may be required as part of the assessment.

Appointments last 30 minutes and cost £35. We will focus on identifying your pet’s main behavioural concerns, discuss short term management options and behavioural first aid and develop an initial behaviour modification plan.

Personalised behaviour modification plan

Following your consultation, we will provide you with a tailored behaviour modification plan designed to address your pet’s specific needs.

This plan will include practical strategies and training techniques you can implement at home.

Behaviour referrals

For more complex cases, we can refer you to a certified clinical animal behaviourist (CCAB) for in-depth behavioural assessment and support.

Medication support

In some instances, medication may be recommended by a veterinary surgeon to support behavioural therapy — especially in cases involving anxiety, phobias or chronic stress. This will always be discussed with you as part of a comprehensive treatment approach.

Confidence clinics

Our confidence clinics are specially designed to support dogs who feel anxious or fearful when visiting the veterinary clinic.

These sessions aim to build trust, confidence and a more positive association with vet visits.

Using classical conditioning, positive reinforcement and co-operative care techniques, we gently help your dog become more comfortable with:

  • Entering the clinic
  • Standing on the weighing scales
  • Settling in reception
  • Receiving treatments (such as nail trims, injections, or examinations)

Confidence clinics are ideal for dogs who are nervous, reactive or have had negative experiences in the past. We focus on stress-free, fear-free handling, always at your dog’s pace.

These appointments last 30 minutes and focus on providing your dog with a calm, positive experience to help reduce fear.

We can gently work on your dog’s individual concerns, gradually introducing handling and treatment-related activities using reward-based methods.

We aim to book these clinics at quieter times to give your dog a quieter space to learn.

The initial cost of the confidence clinic is £32. This includes development of a personalised training plan and a further four sessions to build on your dog’s confidence.
